Room For Rent

Finding a room for rent can be one of the most frustrating activities possible. When I first moved out to San Francisco, I figured it would be easy. I found a room to rent on a temporary basis – a single bedroom studio boardinghouse for international students. It was too expensive to stay at for the long term, But it was within my range while I looked at rooms for rent. I loaded up my computer, turned on craigslist, and started searching. There were so many room for rent ads that I thought it would be easy to find someone. There were pages and pages of them! It seemed like, within a week or two, I would find the perfect roommate.

I had not yet learned what it is like to find rooms for rent in San Francisco, but I sound found out. One of the most common problems that I ran into was the fact that 3 out of every 4 craigslist posters are complete and total flakes. Sometimes, I would respond to a “seeking roommates” ad, set up an appointment, and got completely stood up. Other times, they would not even bother to respond. On at least 2 occasions, I went to look at a room for rent only to find that they were not even sure when they needed a new subletter! They would leave out important details on the ad or change them without telling me. It was as if concepts such as basic consideration and common sense had somehow escaped the whole city!

When I finally did get in contact with someone, there was rarely any common ground with my potential roommate. A lot of these people with room for rent ads were psychos. I got the impression that, in the typical San Francisco 20-something apartment, there is a new roommate every 3 to 4 months. It might not be that bad, but it is worse than you would think. Apparently, everyone who stays in short term housing is completely bonkers. It was 3 months before I could even find a room for rent in a nice, quiet, clean house with housemates who were not completely off the wall. I can't even imagined what it would have been like if I had not had the money to hold out for that long. You would not want to walk down the same street as some of these folks, let alone live with them!

Summary
Rooms for rent vary according to location where you live. Bigger cities will have more options than a smaller one. People who are looking for a room to rent may be a little inconsisten. It may take some time to find a good roommate, so be sure you have the funds to wait it out.
