Discount Tools
When I was just getting started off in construction, I swore I would never used discount tools. I know a lot of construction people cut corners, and I did not want to be one of those folks. I figured that I would buy the best, brand name tools. I knew it cost would me a lot more, but I figured that more expensive tools would be better, and better tools would lead to a better job.
The first year, I spent a huge amount of money just getting my basic equipment together. I did do a good job, and the tools I was using were all of excellent quality. When it came time to replace a couple of them, however, I started rethinking my philosophy.
I went to a discount tools store and was surprised to see that many of the same tools that I had used were available there for a lot less money. Sometimes, I would have to buy the previous year's model or something that was slightly used, but generally there was no significant reduction in quality. I also discovered something else: when you are dealing with hand tools, you can save a lot of money by simply buying the cheap versions. In general, a discount hammer will work every bit as well as an expensive one. The same goes for a saw, a drill, and other sorts of basic power tools and hand tools.
Since that revelation, I have really started to stock up on discount tools. The thing about being a contractor is that, realistically, you do have to cut certain corners. You have to save as much money as you can without compromising on the quality of your construction. By buying cheaper tools and sourcing my supplies more intelligently, I was able to cut down on the expense of my supplies while still using some of the best tools available to get the job done. It was definitely a win-win situation. I was able to increase my profit margin without compromising on my values.
There are some circumstances I still won't buy discount tools in. For example, I won't buy a discount tool that I haven't had the chance to use. Ordering tools online is great when you know what you're getting, but it isn't really worth it if you can not look at something in person first. Nonetheless, once you know the basic brands of construction tools, you can often source them from online companies for a lot cheaper.
Summary
Discount tools can be found which are the same quality and reliability as name brand tools in other stores. Some even carry the same name brand tools, but at much lower prices. Use the handy resources online to find these discount stores and save money on the tools you need.
