When you start any type of new project, you are going to have to worry about the cost of building before you can begin. Without a proper estimate of costs, you are going to run out of money. It happens all of the time. When you are doing work for someone else, it is also important to have this information before you start. Not only will you be sure that they have the money to complete the project, you are also going to make sure you get paid what you should for the work that you are doing.

My husband found this out the hard way, even though he should have known better. He has been in construction for a while now, but to be fair, he doesn’t have to worry about the cost of building as much as his supervisor does. He agreed to build some decks for our past landlord, and they did not agree on the cost of building materials before he began. The cost went over what she thought was right. He took it out of what he paid her, thinking she would reimburse him. He was never able to get that difference back.

In most cases, you can find someone who knows a little about the cost of building just about anything, and you can have them help you out. Usually they can give you a price per square foot. They might say you should charge five dollars per square foot, or even twenty. It depends on the project. Decks can be simple, but they are probably more work than you might guess. If the cost of materials goes over the estimate, you can then stop the project until the difference is paid. It’s for your own good.

No matter what the cost of building might be, make sure you get it in writing. This was half of my husband’s problem. He trusted our landlord to do the right thing because she was my best friend’s mom. Even my friend warned him that he should get the cost of building materials and his costs in writing, but he never listened to her. Even she knew her mom would pull a fast one if the door was left open. It was, and she did take advantage. Now when he does work on the side like this, he gets everything in writing.

Summary: Cost of building materials can vary tremendously from one day to the next. If you are in construction, materials cost is very real, and you do not want to short change yourself by giving a low estimate. Most of the time, if you estimate a little higher and explain to the customer how the costs are calculated, you could potentially come in uner budget which would make the customer very happy.
